Solar battery boom: why every Australian household and business needs to act now

Australian households and businesses are facing rising energy costs, grid instability and growing pressure to reduce emissions. The solution? Solar battery technology, a game-changing investment that delivers energy independence, reliability and major cost savings.

According to Steven Yu, CEO of Aussie Solar Batteries Group, solar plus battery systems are no longer just a ‘nice-to-have for the future, they are essential today.

“Solar batteries turn sunlight into security,” Yu said.

“They slash bills, protect homes and businesses during blackouts and give Australians control over their energy future. For the first time, thanks to new government support, this technology is affordable and accessible for almost every household and small business.”

Federal rebate driving demand

From 1 July 2025, the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program began offering unprecedented support for households and businesses to install battery storage systems. Rebates now cut around 30 percent off the upfront cost of eligible batteries, equivalent to up to $372 per kilowatt-hour of usable capacity. The support applies to systems between five kilowatt-hours and 100 kilowatt-hours, capped at the first 50 kilowatt-hours.

The scheme is open to households, small businesses and community organisations nationwide, and it is not means-tested, ensuring accessibility for all Australians. Delivered under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, the rebate will gradually taper down until 2030 as battery prices fall.

“This is the most generous battery rebate we’ve ever seen,” Yu said.

“It means everyday Australians, not just big corporations, can take control of their energy bills, while supporting our national transition to clean power.”

How much can households and businesses save?

The financial benefits of solar batteries are immediate and long term. For households, a well-sized solar and battery system can reduce annual electricity bills by up to 70 percent, saving an average family between $1,500 and $3,000 every year. Businesses, which typically have larger energy demands, can save significantly more, often tens of thousands of dollars annually depending on size, consumption and operating hours.

“Every dollar saved on electricity is a dollar that can be redirected into families and businesses,” Yu said.

“Solar batteries pay for themselves over time, while insulating owners from unpredictable energy price rises.”

Making properties more energy savvy

Beyond direct savings, installing solar and battery technology makes a property smarter, more sustainable and more attractive in the market. Properties with battery storage are increasingly seen as energy savvy assets, offering future owners lower ongoing costs and protection from rising power prices.

Smart battery systems also allow households and businesses to monitor and manage energy use in real-time, making operations more efficient and environmentally conscious. For businesses, this creates a stronger sustainability profile and demonstrates leadership to staff and customers. For households, it means peace of mind and greater independence.

“Solar batteries add long-term value to properties,” Yu said.

“They are no longer just about saving on bills, they are about building future-ready, energy-smart homes and businesses.”

Why solar batteries make sense now

Solar battery systems cut bills, increase independence from the grid, provide resilience during blackouts, build trust with staff and customers and reduce carbon emissions. They are a powerful way for every Australian to participate in the clean energy transition while enjoying immediate financial and lifestyle benefits.

“Every home, every business that installs solar and batteries is protecting their bottom line, future-proofing their energy and joining the movement towards a cleaner, more sustainable Australia,” Yu said.

“Energy independence is no longer a dream. It’s here, it’s affordable and it’s changing lives.”

Yu emphasised that many current solar enabled households are now experiencing financial challenges despite the early financial benefits of solar.  The export tariff, which is money paid to households for selling solar generated power during the day to the grid, is $0.03 - $0.05.  Ridiculously, households still need to buy the same electricity from the grid during the night at a much higher rate of $0.35 -$0.69.   Energy stored in a battery means there is less need to buy back power from the grid.  These numbers demonstrate the value and savings provided to households by adding a battery.
