HEPA Air Purifier: How to Find the Best One in Australia

  • Written by NewsServices.com

It's no secret that air pollution is a growing problem. In large cities, the air quality can often be quite poor. And whilst many people think of outdoor air pollution when they hear the word ‘pollution’, indoor air pollution can be just as bad, or even worse.

One way to help improve your indoor air quality is by using a HEPA air purifier.

HEPA air purifiers are a popular form of particulate air cleaning system. These devices have been designed to clean and remove different types or sizes of particles from your home's atmosphere. However, with so many models on the market, it can be difficult to choose the best one for your needs.

With this guide, we’ll help you understand better how to find the best HEPA filter air purifier in the market.

What Is a HEPA Air Purifier?

A HEPA air purifier is a filtration device that relies on a HEPA filter in capturing airborne particles that serve as contaminants and allergens.

HEPA stands for ‘high-efficiency particulate air’. The HEPA technology is applied on filters so they will function accordingly based on how they are designed.

With a HEPA air purifier, you can ensure that its filter will eliminate certain microparticles that act as pathogens floating in the air. Examples of these are particles coming from pet dander, dust mites from furniture and carpets, mould spores on walls, pollen from plants and virus particles that sick people exhale within a room.

What Does a HEPA Air Purifier Do?

The main job of a HEPA filter air purifier is to remove stubborn air particles from your indoor air. Rensair HEPA air purifier from XPower, for example, works efficiently in rooms that require air cleansing because it purifies the air and traps microparticles as tiny as 0.3 microns and as much as 99.97% of these particles in the air.

The HEPA filter that acts as the core of the purifier is designed with an interwoven fibreglass surface for particles to have no way out once trapped in between the mesh. Though not totally eliminated, once trapped, these particles die eventually as they stay in the filter for long periods and get adsorbed with the help of a UV-C lamp in the purifier device. As a result, all you get is clean air from the cycle in which the device draws in dirty air and spews out clean air.

The three mechanisms that make up a HEPA filter are there to ensure particles won't get through. These are:

  • Interception —this is where particles run into the fibres directly.
  • Diffusion —this is where the smallest particles clash with gas molecules, obstructing their way across the filter.
  • Impaction —this is where larger-sized particles are embedded straight into the fibres.

What Are the Benefits of HEPA Air Purifiers?

Below are some of the amazing benefits of HEPA air purifiers:

  • Help relieve asthma symptoms.
  • Eliminate harmful chemicals from indoor environments.
  • Reduce risk of lung-related illnesses.
  • Improve sleep quality.
  • Eliminate harmful particles (e.g., asbestos, radon) from floors, walls and ceilings.
  • Improve life expectancy.

Different Types of Air Purifiers

In addition to a HEPA air purifier, the following are other types according to filters.

  • Electrostatic—With its filter, this air purifier can trap particles using static charge, helping particles to attach to the filter.
  • Ultra-HEPA—Ultra-HEPA air purifier is capable of trapping 99.99% of particles under 0.3 microns or even smaller.
  • Electrostatic precipitator—This type uses wires or metal plates to attract particles that contain opposite charges. This filter can be reused or washed.
  • Ionisation—Its filter relies on a small charge that gives off a magnetic-like attraction to airborne particles. Also, this type of filtration may release ozone gases that can irritate people with respiratory illnesses.

How Do I Choose a Hepa Air Purifier?

With so many options available, it can be hard to know where your priorities lie. So, if you're looking for a new HEPA air filter purifier, here are things you need to consider.

  • Size

When looking for a HEPA air filter purifier, make sure that it’s designed to fit your specific room size. The measurement should be about two-thirds of the total area in use.

Hence, if you have 1.8 square metres available then try selecting a 30 cm by 43 cm model rather than one 24", wide which would only provide protection for around 5%.

  • Look for an air purifier that does not emit ozone gas

Ozone gas is released during some air purification processes, but it can also be considered a pollutant. When inhaled, this chemical could cause irritation and damage to your lungs.

  • Check industry ratings

When you purchase an air purifier, make sure it meets the following criteria:

  • The product filters particles smaller than 1 micron as stated by the manufacturer
  • Assigned HEPA air filter purifier.

Summing Up

You can’t put your health at risk knowing the air you breathe inside your home isn’t pristine. Hopefully, this article has enlightened you about HEPA air purifiers. This is highly necessary because it will help you make an informed decision when purchasing. With the abundance of options on the market, you’ll be able to find one your ideal HEPA air purifier.
