Gen Z Does Off Road, Not Bush Bashing

Aussies love a good adventure and off-roading is one of the best ways to enjoy an adrenaline rush amongst rugged and stunning landscapes. While traditionally, exploring these untouched areas was called “bush bashing”, there’s been a shift in the approach to off-road adventures - particularly with the Gen Z crowd.

The new generation is redefining what it means to explore the great outdoors, prioritising sustainability and environmental preservation over the thrill of conquering unchartered territories. According to research, 72% of Gen Zs have already altered their behaviour to reduce their environmental impact.

Living The Van Life - Sustainably

For Gen Zs, off-roading isn’t just about the excitement of navigating Australia’s landscapes – it’s about responsible exploration and enjoying the thrill without leaving a footprint.

Their passion extends to their choice of transport, with a growing preference for vans and campers that allow them to connect with nature on a deeper level. As a result, the demand for eco-friendly off-road campers and vans is on the rise. Things like solar power, water recycling, and sustainable materials are all becoming the norm because Gen Z demands it.

John Perry from JAWA Caravans Queensland sums it up nicely.

"Young folks today are all in for off-road adventures and living the van life,” he says. “But they wouldn't dream of wrecking habitats or sacred sites. They want real experiences that protect and preserve Australia's natural beauty and cultural landmarks."

Gen Z's love for off-roading is about connecting with nature on a deeper level, learning from the environment, and following the principles of 'Leave No Trace.' This mindset influences everything – where they go, what they do, and how they interact with local communities and Indigenous cultures.

Embracing Eco-friendly Adventures

And it’s not just Australia – it’s a global movement as Gen Z uses social media and technology to document their travels in sustainable vans and campers. They share insights into responsible exploration, spreading awareness about sustainable practices and the critical importance of conservation. This has led to a more informed and connected community of young explorers committed to positively impacting the planet.

Essentially, Gen Z is redefining what it means to go on off-road adventures. It's no longer about conquering nature; it's about living in harmony with it. This new approach is helping to keep Australia's wilderness pristine for generations to come and making the whole experience even richer.

“By prioritising sustainability in their off-road adventures,” Perry says, “Gen Z is not just exploring the countryside in eco-friendly campers and caravans. They're setting new standards for how we engage with the environment.”
