How Do Men's and Women's Vitamin Gummies Differ?

Couple Enjoying Daily Multivitamins

Vitamin gummies have become quite popular lately among all demographics. Most people are unable to fulfil their nutritional deficiency just from regular meals; vitamin gummies help to bridge that gap effectively. Walk into any wellness store, and you’ll realise that there are always different variations of the same vitamin gummies bottle for women and men.

The packaging is different, the taglines are different, and sometimes even the flavours and bottle shape. But why? After all, the vitamins themselves don’t know if they are going into a male or female body, and regardless of gender, they work in the same way and have similar effects. So, is it just a marketing gimmick? Or is there more to it? Let’s find out!

What is the need for having different vitamin gummies for men and women?

Men and women have different daily recommended dietary allowances, also known as RDA’s. This basically means the exact ideal amount of a specific nutrient that a human needs. Usually, the RDA for vitamins has only a slight difference for both men and women. However, certain nutrients have huge differences because of hormones, life stages, and anatomy.

Women's nutrient requirements fluctuate from time to time due to menstruation, pregnancy, menopause & breastfeeding. Men, on the other hand, have pretty constant requirements, but due to heavier bone structure and more muscle, they often need slightly higher doses of certain nutrients like zinc, vitamin C, and magnesium. That’s why you’ll notice that vitamin gummies for men and women have slightly different dosages per serving.

Vitamins & Nutrients with a Small Difference in Daily Intake Requirement

  1. Vitamin C: 90 mg for men, 75 mg for women
  2. Vitamin A: 900 mcg for men, 700 mcg for women
  3. Vitamin K: 120 mcg for men, 90 mcg for women
  4. Zinc: 11 mg for men, 8 mg for women
  5. Magnesium: 400-420 mg for men, 310-320 mg for women
  6. Choline: 550 mg for men, 425 mg for women

Vitamins & Nutrients with Major Differences in Daily Intake Requirements

Iron

Iron requirements for men and women differ a lot. As per the United States National Institute of Health, women between the ages of 19 and 50 require at least 18 mg of iron every day. Men in the same age bracket only need around 8 mg per day.

This is because women lose lots of blood every month during their menstrual cycle, which results in a fast depletion of stored iron in the body. Women who are pregnant need an even higher dosage, that is, around 27 mg per day.

However, after menopause, women’s requirements also fall to the same as men, which is 8 mg. That’s why gummy vitamin manufacturers make different multivitamin and mineral gummies for men and women.

If men eat these high-iron gummies, it can cause hemochromatosis, which is a condition in which the body absorbs too much iron, causing mood, sexual, joint, and general health issues. As a result, men's vitamin gummies contain very low or nil amounts of iron compared to women's options.

Folate

Vitamin B9 is commonly known as folate; it plays an essential role in helping the body to make new cells and DNA. Both men and women need around 400 micrograms of folate every day. However, women need to focus on it more than women.

As per the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), pregnant women must consume 400 mcg every day; anything below that can cause issues. Regular folate consumption reduces the risk of birth defects in the brain and spine, especially in the first week of pregnancy. That’s why women's vitamin gummies often come with folate, and some men's gummies don’t have it.

Vitamin D & Calcium

Compared to men, women are at a much higher risk of developing osteoporosis. A condition in which bones become weak, thin, and brittle, increasing the risk of fracture. Calcium & vitamin D are both very much essential for improving bone strength. The RDA limit of calcium for women is around 1000 mg every day for the 19 to 50 age bracket and 1200 mg above age 51.

Whereas men can sustain 1000 mg until the age of 70 and 1200 mg after that. The basic vitamin D requirement is 600 IU. But that is simply not enough; this RDA limit has not been revised in ages.

Modern experts believe that everyone needs at least 1000 IU of vitamin D every day. Usually, women's gummies come with higher calcium content compared to men's gummies. Eating too much calcium is also not good, as it can increase the risk of kidney stones. So always buy from reputable brands like TrustWorks MFG so that you get the exact amount as mentioned on the label.

Sometimes it's just marketing.

You’ll notice the men's gummies are labelled with things like palmetto or lycopene for promoting prostate health and extra zinc for testosterone support. However, the trials for these things have limited success and do not show any clear benefit. These sound like fancy things that influencers pump up, and people end up buying them thinking they are life-changing.

Similarly, some women get marketed as having special biotin for hair and skin health. Yet, the only evidence of benefits from it is there only when someone is highly deficient. So taking such gummies without getting blood work done might not be a very good idea.

Manufacturers often market gummies for men and women with added adaptogens like ashwagandha, lemongrass, lemon balm, shatavri, beetroot extract, and all, but often the added quantity is not enough to make a meaningful difference. So yes, in most cases it is just a marketing gimmick.

So, do men and women actually need separate vitamin gummies?

In most cases, the answer is no. Instead of opting for gender-specific multivitamin gummies, you should opt for specific vitamin and mineral-carrying gummies for deficiencies you have. It is always better to get a blood test done first before going in for a supplement buy free.

The only difference will be the strength of specific vitamins. For example, a husband may need 2k IU vitamin gummies, and a wife may need just 1k IU vitamin gummies depending on their current vitamin D levels. Even if you swap the products, there is not much difference.

Bottom line - How to choose the right vitamin gummy?

Always buy from reputable brands that give you the latest lab test reports verified by independent labs. Don’t fall for specific cures or benefits; often they are not backed by real science or data. Just get your blood work done at 6-month intervals, and choose your vitamin gummy option accordingly.

There can be periods where you load and then deload a specific vitamin, especially vitamin D and B12. Always read the RDA limits and try not to go beyond that number unless suggested by a doctor.

Don’t go for cheaper versions, as they often use a low bioavailable form of vitamin in the product. It’s better to splurge a little than regret later on. Lastly, gummy vitamins do taste quite good, so it’s common to lose track and eat too many. Once in a while may be ok, but if done regularly, it can cause long-lasting damage to the body, so keep your impulses under control.
