Designing Your Perfect Garden: Top Native Plants for Every Landscape

Creating a garden that suits your space and climate can be simple when you choose native plants. These types of plants are just naturally suited to local conditions, making them easier to care for and more resilient. Whether you are just kind of working with a small balcony of some sort or a large backyard, there’s a perfect native plant to fit your needs.

Trees for Shade & Structure

Trees are essential for any garden, adding shade and structure while helping wildlife thrive. Native trees are low-maintenance and they fit perfectly well into the environment, giving you a rather beautiful backdrop for your space.

  • Eucalyptus (Gum Trees) – If you’re someone like most of us who is looking for something more versatile, the Dwarf Lemon-scented Gum is perfect for that. Its fresh scent adds something extra to your garden. And if you have a rather large area to work with, the River Red Gum would be the best bet, providing shade and character you are looking for.
  • Corymbia (Spotted Gum) – The Spotted Gum has this distinctive, smooth bark that adds quite the visual interest which really adds a pleasant aesthetic value. It’s a great choice for those dry regions, adding shade and style with minimal care.
  • Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) – The Sydney Red Gum stands out really well with its pink bark and twisting branches. If you are someone after something that is super striking and that can handle dry conditions while still offering year-round interest, this is for you.
  • Heliconia Tropics – Among the many types of Heliconia, this variety stands out for its tall leaves and suitability for tropical and subtropical climates. These types of heliconia are low-maintenance, require minimal watering, and thrive in full sunlight, making them a favorite for gardeners seeking an exotic yet practical touch.

Shrubs for Colour & Form

Shrubs are your best friends as they add depth to your garden, creating layers of texture and bursts of colour. They are great to have for filling in those annoying gaps, and many of these native varieties are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant.

  • Grevillea – The Grevillea 'Robyn Gordon' is a great option for it has bright flowers that bloom almost all year round. These shrubs attract birds, bringing life and activity to your garden.
  • Callistemon (Bottlebrush) – The vibrant red flowers of the Bottlebrush are unmistakable. These shrubs are perfect for hedges or even just stand-alone features. They also bring in birds and bees, giving those chirps and buzzes, adding colour and life to your space.
  • Melaleuca (Paperbark) – If your garden tends to get a little boggy than usual, the Paperbark thrives in wet areas. Its peeling bark adds the texture you need to your garden, and the white or pink flowers brighten things up during the bloom season.

Ground Covers for Texture & Soil Health

Ground covers are excellent for filling in those empty spaces, protecting your soil, and keeping the pesky weeds down. These ground covers require just a little maintenance and they add a lush, green layer to your garden.

  • Dichondra repens (Kidney Weed) – This low-growing plant is a great choice for shady areas and can even replace grass in spots where not a lot of people go. It creates a dense, green carpet that looks really good and it requires not a lot of maintenance.

  • Myoporum parvifolium – If you have some slopes or borders that could really use a bit of covering, this fast-spreading ground cover is a great option. It has small, green leaves and delicate flowers that make it an attractive addition to any garden out there.
  • Zoysia tenuifolia (No-Mow Grass) – For a soft and more natural look that requires almost no mowing, No-Mow Grass (yes, that’s the name!) is your perfect bet. Its wavy appearance adds a flowing texture to the landscape, great for low-maintenance gardens.

  • Hardenbergia violacea (Native Wisteria) – If you want to add some colour to your ground covers, Native Wisteria produces vibrant purple flowers that can trail along trellises or cover garden beds.

Flowering Plants for Vibrancy

Flowering plants are the star of your garden as they add that burst of colour. Many native species bloom so vibrantly that they attract local wildlife, giving your garden the beauty and life it needs.

  • Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos) – With its striking, fuzzy flowers, the Kangaroo Paw adds the very needed vertical interest to your garden. These flowers come in a lot of different colours and they do well in sunny spots with well-drained soil.

  • Chrysocephalum apiculatum (Yellow Buttons) – For small golden flowers that bloom all year, Yellow Buttons are an easy addition to your garden. They’re well-suited for rock gardens or even just as a colourful border.

  • Banksia – Known for their large, spiky flower cones, Banksias attract a variety of birds, bees, and other insects which adds colour and texture to your garden. Conveniently, they also require little maintenance.

Grasses for Movement & Softness

Grasses add that much-needed softness to your garden, gently swaying in with the breeze and giving the space a relaxing and calming feel. Native grasses are particularly hardy, needing little water or maintenance.

  • Lomandra – Lomandra is such a good choice for the toughest spots in your garden. It has those arching leaves that add texture, and it thrives in most conditions with minimal effort. It’s perfect if you are a busy person as this grass does not need your full attention.

  • Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass) – If you like surprises and variety, this grass changes colour throughout the year, giving your garden a full-season show. It’s perfect for a more natural, wild garden style and it does really well in dry conditions.

  • Poa labillardierei (Tussock Grass) – Tussock Grass adds more movement and more texture, flowing softly with the wind. It tolerates drought and works well in both sunny and partially shaded areas. You can never go wrong with it in your garden.

Climbers for Vertical Interest

Do you have a wall to cover? A fence or a trellis perhaps? Then these native climbers are a great way to add greenery and height to your garden. They’re super easy to grow and create lush, vertical layers.

  • Pandorea jasminoides (Bower Vine) – This fast-growing vine produces delicate, trumpet-shaped flowers in nice shades of pink or white. It’s perfect for softening up those bare fences or walls and they thrive in most garden conditions.

  • Hibbertia scandens (Snake Vine) – Snake Vine is a tough climber that produces bright yellow flowers. A great option for large areas and it can handle coastal conditions. This is perfect if you live near the sea!

Designing your garden with these native plants makes it not only beautiful but also low-maintenance and environmentally friendly.

These plants are naturally suited to your climate, meaning they’ll thrive with less care, save water, and support local wildlife (like bees and birds). Whether you’re after bold flowers, soft grasses, or hardy trees, these plants will help you create a vibrant, sustainable garden that grows effortlessly year after year.

Get inspired and start planting – your perfect garden is closer than you think!
