How Does Skills Influence Your Career Choice

The choice of a career is the most important in a person's life. This is a choice of life path, environment. We spend a lot of time at work. It is great if the work is enjoyable, and the person is useful in their workplace.

A career's choice can be influenced by many factors - the prestige of the specific profession, financial aspect, parents' expectations, influence of friends, cultural background, socio-economic stratum a person belongs to, etc. But one of the essential factors is considered to be the type of personality and inherent skills. These can be decisive when choosing a profession.

Features of Career Guidance for Different Types of Personality

The famous psychologist Carl Jung identified several personality types in their outstanding work on socionics. A similar trend in the US is known as the "Myers-Briggs Typology: MBTI" - this method is widely used to help with career guidance. It is not uncommon for job candidates to indicate their personality type in their CVs in the US. The personality type is determined by a combination of scales:

  • Extraversion - introversion;
  • Irrationality - rationality;
  • Logics - ethics;
  • Intuition - sensorics.

Such characteristics can comprehensively describe a person, compose their psychological portrait.

Extroverts and introverts

Extroverts direct their attention to the outside world, they are not inclined to remake people, but more perceive them as they are. Extroverts need to interact with people and can influence others emotionally. Extroverts have vivid, lively gestures, are usually very dynamic.

Introverts are more focused on their inner world. They are deeper in their analysis of what is happening, more focused on the relationships of subjects, objects. In general, introverts are distinguished by relatively modest gestures, are prone to solitude.

Naturally, both types are characterized by a predisposition to different professions. Extroverts tend to interact more with people, while introverts prefer solo work.

Psychological features are just the beginning, a kind of incentive to develop specific skills. Which, in turn, have an unconditional influence on the choice of profession. Interaction with people is relevant both for sales managers and actors, for everyone who needs to communicate with many people, for whom the ability to influence people is critical.

Irrationals and rationals

Irrationals are perceptual and tend to regard the world comprehensively.

Rationals tend to rely on traditions, established order. They enjoy acting in the system.

Irrationals perform better in rushed, quickly changing environments. Rationals prefer to perform a certain amount of work consistently.

Ethicists and logicians

Ethicists depend on generally accepted moral standards. They lean towards describing what is happening emotionally.

Logicians focus on objective decisions, logical postulates. They are characterized by speech turnovers like "let us think it over."

Of course, certain personality traits affect the development of skills. But this does not mean that a logician will certainly choose accounting, and an ethicist will choose to work with people. Even people with a weaker logic function may become excellent programmers and mathematicians.

But this is with the presence of effort, labor, and intent. One can go far with determination, arduous work, and patience. In general, the psychological type determines the propensity to a particular subject, and a person begins to develop specific skills.

Intuits and sensorics

Intuits are well oriented in time. Nevertheless, they are often scatter-brained.

The principle of here and now is inherent to sensorics - they are well oriented in the actual space, as a rule, these are strong-willed people.

Choosing a Field of Activity

The choice of a profession is determined by the type of person who prefers developing certain skills.

Social sphere

In the social sphere, ethicists and sensorics are very relevant. For example, they make excellent doctors. Inherent susceptibility to humanism, the ability to emotionally communicate, to feel the interlocutor, is helpful for teachers and coaches.

Communications

The sphere of communications is a space for intuits and ethicists. These are dedicated diplomats, people who have a keen sense of circumstances and relationships. They can excel in this field easily.

Scientific research

The field of scientific research is beneficial to logicians and intuits. Such people can make high-quality forecasts by analyzing relevant data. They love thoughtful work.

Production and management

In the production and management sphere, logicians and sensorics are excellent. These are strong-willed people who have scrupulousness, perseverance, can operate data well, and accurately assess the situation.

Impact of Intellectual Skills on the Choice of Profession

Experts also highlight the types of intelligence that can have a decisive effect on the formation of skills, and as a result, on the choice of the future field of activity:

  • Component intelligence - high ability to learn, generalize information;
  • Empirical intelligence - data decryption, comparison;
  • Contextual intelligence - high adaptability.

Abilities Affecting Choice of Profession

Experts distinguish the following types of abilities:

  • Musical - people, who have it well developed, can become excellent musicians and sound engineers;
  • Spatial - excellent orientation in space, relevant to architecture, for instance;
  • Motor - developed skills in this area can lead a person to succeed in sports or dancing career;
  • Interpersonal - people with excellent interpersonal skills tend to choose jobs that require interacting with people as an occupation.

Summary

It is essential to understand that any skill needs constant development! Whatever the initial skillset, only continuous development can lead a person to success. Abilities for music, painting, sports, mathematics are just a start-up capital. Everything else depends on labor, striving forward always. At any age, a person can reach a new level; the main thing is never to stop learning, training, and developing skills.
