Online Christmas shoppers fund climate and biodiversity projects via HealthPost's Click Sphere for Good initiative

Online shoppers with HealthPost’s Flora & Fauna have made 11,000 contributions towards climate and biodiversity projects when ordering parcel deliveries in the lead up to Christmas.

The tool, launched in September, lets shoppers view an estimate of their delivery-related emissions, while Flora & Fauna automatically adds a small climate contribution at checkout.

Customers can choose to add an additional low-cost contribution that aids the Sunnyside Permanent Planting Project, a verified climate project supporting native ecosystems in south-west Western Australia.

Since the launch there has been over 11,000 contributions when customers order parcel deliveries, roughly equivalent to the yearly carbon uptake of several hundred trees, or the emissions from approximately 31,000 km of driving.

With holiday shopping now peaking, climate contributions are expected to rise dramatically. Last year, Australia Post recorded 103 million parcel deliveries from November through Christmas, highlighting the potential scale for impact if more retailers adopt the tool.

How it works: At checkout, customers see an estimate of delivery emissions, which is calculated in real-time based on their order contents, address and shipping method. Flora & Fauna automatically make a climate contribution to match this amount, while customers can choose to add an additional low-cost contribution that supports a verified climate project. Retailers can implement the feature using the Click Sphere for Good app for Shopify.

Quote — Sphere (Shaun Lordan, CEO):

“We’re extremely proud to see the success of Click Sphere for Good’s pilot with Flora & Fauna. The contributions to climate action from Flora & Fauna and their customers show the desire consumers have to reduce their carbon footprint. With the success of the pilot, we hope to see more widespread adoption and even greater reductions in emissions.”

Quote — HealthPost (Abel Butler, CEO):

“Flora & Fauna's partnership with Sphere has been a great success. We’re delighted with the uptake and the way customers have embraced this climate contribution feature. Together we’ve already directed contributions linked to an estimated 5 tonnes of delivery-related emissions in just three months. For us this is a practical, meaningful and transparent step we're taking now, alongside the harder work of directly reducing our footprint over time.”
