How Does Stainless Steel Press Fit Technology Work?

For a plumbing system to work well, connections need to be secure and leak-free. This ensures water flows smoothly and reduces the risk of damage.

Stainless steel pipe press fittings are a popular choice for plumbing installations. They're easy to install, durable and perform well.

In this article, we’ll be taking an extensive look at the working mechanism, ley features and overall advantages of stainless steel press fitting technology.

Stainless Steel Press Fit Technology: Definition & Working Mechanism

A stainless steel press fitting is a technology that uses a hydraulic press tool to join two pieces of pipe or tubing together. The metal-to-metal connection provides the mechanical link, while the sealing element ensures a watertight and airtight seal.

In stainless steel press fittings, the sealing element is typically an O-ring made of high-quality materials like EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), FKM (fluoroelastomer) or HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber).

This O-ring is super important, as it sits inside the fitting and compresses when the hydraulic press tool is applied.

When the O-ring compresses against the pipe or tubing, it creates a watertight and airtight seal, preventing leaks and ensuring the durability of the connection. No heat is required for this process, and this eliminates the risks associated with high temperatures and provides a faster installation.

Using a Stainless Steel Press Fitting

First, you'll need to cut the pipe to the desired length using a suitable cutting tool. Make sure the cut is straight and clean, as this will provide a proper surface for the fitting.

After that, you'll need to deburr the cut ends of the tube, both inside and outside, using a deburring tool. This step removes any sharp edges, burrs or debris that could damage the sealing element or interfere with the fitting process.

After that, you'll need to apply a witness mark on the tube at the appropriate insertion depth. This mark serves as a visual guide to confirm that the tube is fully inserted into the fitting during assembly.

Once you've completed these steps, you can assemble the press fit by inserting the tube into the press-fitting until it reaches the witness mark. You have to make sure it's fully aligned and seated, then use the hydraulic press tool to securely press the fitting. This will create a strong, leak-proof connection.

Key Features of Stainless Steel Press

Here are some of the key features of the stainless steel press:

Efficiency/Faster Installation Time

Because stainless steel press fittings are faster to install, they also reduce labour costs. You'll need fewer workers to complete the job, and you'll save time and money on labour costs.

For example, suppose you're working on a residential plumbing project that requires 100 fittings. With traditional methods, each fitting might take around 10-15 minutes to install, depending on the complexity of the job and the material being used. This means that the total installation time would be around 1,000-1,500 minutes or around 16-25 hours.

With stainless steel press fittings, each fitting takes around 2-5 minutes to install, depending on the complexity of the job and the material being used. This means that the total installation time would be around 200-500 minutes, or around 3-8 hours.

As you can see, stainless steel press fittings can save you a significant amount of time and money on labour costs.

Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel press fittings offer excellent corrosion resistance, making them ideal for use in harsh environments. This is basically because the materials used to make stainless steel press fittings are resistant to corrosion, which means they can withstand exposure to chemicals, saltwater, and other corrosive substances.

This makes stainless steel press fittings an excellent choice for applications where corrosion is a concern, such as in marine environments, chemical processing plants, or other harsh environments.

Leak Proof Performance

The leak-proof performance of stainless steel press fittings is achieved through the use of a specialised sealing element, typically an O-ring or a gasket. This sealing element is designed to compress and seal the connection between the pipe and the fitting when the fitting is pressed onto the pipe.

Because of this feature, your plumbing system will operate efficiently and effectively, without the worry of leaks or water damage.

Why Stainless Steel Press Is Better than Traditional Methods

Here are some compelling reasons why tradespeople prefer steel press over traditional methods:

Improved Safety

Stainless steel press fittings also offer improved safety, as they eliminate the need for heat. Traditional methods of joining pipes and tubing often involve heat, which can pose a fire hazard.

Stainless steel press fittings are flame-free, which reduces the risk of fire hazards and makes them ideal for use in enclosed spaces or short crawlspaces.

Increased Reliability

Stainless steel press fittings are also more reliable than traditional methods, with a strong and durable connection that can withstand even the toughest conditions.

Traditional methods of joining pipes and tubing often involve soldering or welding, which can create weak points in the connection. Stainless steel press fittings eliminate those weak points.

Lesser Fire Hazards

Traditional methods of joining pipes and tubing often involve heat, which can pose a fire hazard. Stainless steel press fittings eliminate the need for heat, making them a safer choice for applications where fire hazards are a concern.

This makes stainless steel press fittings an excellent choice for applications where safety is a top priority, such as in residential or commercial buildings, hospitals or other occupied spaces.
