How to visit Rome as a local

  • Written by Business Daily Media

Rome is truly a fantastic city, especially when viewed through the eyes of a tourist seeing it for the first time. The incredible wonders of the Colosseum, the breathtaking views of the Trevi Fountain, the romance of the Spanish Steps – is there anything that surpasses the majesty of this incredible place? But what if we told you that your trip could be even more interesting if you
discovered the authentic Rome like a true Roman?

We have prepared a very special guide for you, which will make your trip even more colorful, rich, and filled with emotions.

Eat like a true Roman

Food is central to Roman culture, and tasting the local dishes is a must.

Sample typical foods like cacio e pepe, carbonara, and supplì, fried rice balls. To experience Roman coffee culture, stand at the bar and enjoy a quick espresso with a pastry.

At the evening, we recommend to head to Trastevere, which is a charming spot with winding streets and a special energy. You can dine at a local trattoria and admire the stunning Santa Maria in Trastevere. Or, in alternative, also experience Testaccio, famous for its food scene, which offers classic Roman dishes and markets that capture the city’s rich culinary past. Monti boasts a bohemian feel, with boutiques, vintage stores, and a lively nightlife, perfect for a relaxing walk.

Get close to the authentic experience

Getting around Rome is an adventure in itself. Familiarize yourself with the Rome metro and bus system, which give great insight into daily Roman life. On the other hand, walking is a great option since many of the city attractions are relatively close to each other. This way, you will be able to stumble upon those hidden jewels and enjoy the scenery on your way to such places.

While the Colosseum and the Vatican are world-renowned and therefore shouldn't be missed, that doesn't mean that you slight the rest of the less popular places. The Basilica di San Clemente and the Aventine Keyhole are quieter spots where a person can have personal experiences. Not to mention that numerous parks can be seen, such as Villa Doria Pamphili-one perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon away from the crowds.

Appreciate the city's true energy

The cultural scene of Rome is by far not limited to the famous museums. Make sure you find some local art galleries or even street performances, especially in areas like Ostiense, where you really can appreciate the thriving artistic community. While on a tour of discovery, do not forget about the many beautiful churches throughout the city. Besides the well-known St. Peter's Basilica, places such as Santa Prassede or San Giovanni in Laterano are free to enter and full of history.

Visiting Rome as a local offers a unique perspective. By embracing the authentic culture, you’ll create unforgettable memories that go far beyond the typical tourist experience. So, step off the beaten path and immerse yourself in the true essence of Rome, where every corner holds a story and every meal is a celebration.
